How to Predict Football Scorelines

A strategy guide grounded in real Predicts10 player accuracy data.

Outcome first, scoreline second

It's tempting to treat every prediction as a guess at the exact final score. But Predicts10 doesn't only reward the exact score - you get 3 points for calling the correct result (win, draw or loss) even if the scoreline's wrong, and 10 if you nail it exactly. That partial credit changes the maths on how you should actually predict.

Across our first three gameweeks, Predicts10 players landed the exact score on just 9.6% of predictions - but got the correct result (exact or not) on 44%. In other words, getting the outcome right happened more than four times as often as getting the scoreline exactly right. If you're choosing between two scorelines that both feel plausible for the same result, the one that's a smaller stretch on the actual goal difference is usually the safer pick, not the one that feels like a "bolder" call.

Respect home advantage, but don't overdo it

In the fixtures we've scored so far, home teams won 40% of the time, away teams won 27%, and the rest were draws. Home advantage is real and worth weighting toward - but it's not a coin flip stacked two-to-one, so treating every home team as a safe lock is how a lot of "obvious" predictions still miss.

Use Golden Result on your most confident pick, not your riskiest

Golden Result doubles whatever you score on one pick each gameweek - 20 points for an exact score, 6 for a correct result. Because the correct-result points double too, it doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing swing for the fences. Your golden pick is usually best spent on the fixture you're most sure about the result of, not the one where you're most tempted to call an exact scoreline no one else would guess. A confident 6 beats a hopeful 0.

Ties are broken by consistency, not one lucky week

If you finish level with another player, the first tiebreaker isn't your best single result - it's your total goal-difference error added up across all 10 fixtures that gameweek (see How It Works for the full step-by-step). That rewards being consistently close across the whole card over being wildly right on one game and wildly wrong on the rest - worth keeping in mind before predicting a 5-0 landslide "for fun" on a fixture you're not actually confident about.
